Stop Keeping Score
It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Insight:
I’m sure you heard this popular song. Consider the lyrics to Ed Sheeran’s song “Perfect”:
“When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath / But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight.”
Have you ever felt that you see yourself less perfect or undeserving than our loved ones see us ? It is underestimating our own appeal. Most of the time, if you are not in despair, you might idealize your own self. But once we are influenced by “comparison”, it ends up that joy and self esteem suffers.
Physical Attractiveness are one of the factors. Nowadays, that “selfie” or “groupie” are everywhere in the social networking sites, we feel more pressured to look better. If you compare your look to celebrities that you see, you may temporarily feel insecure. However, if you compare your partner’s ratings to physical attractiveness on you, you can see that your partner finds you more attractive than the strangers do. It is because as you get to know each other, you respect each other more.
On the opposite side, if we always view ourself better than others, we fail to recognize that they might have this weakness of feeling insecure. The times when you feel that you are always right and it turns to debate and this controls the tense of the argument until having the feeling of resentment and unforgiveness.
When we walk in unforgiveness, we try to “keep score,” viewing ourselves as better than the other person.
Why not focus on the encouragements and praises we received from our loved ones ? And from there, start to show the same compassion and understanding that they show us and give this to others.
When we walk in God’s love, we find freedom by keeping “no account” of wrongs done to us. If you’re hurting from the pain of unforgiveness today, ask God to help you stop keeping score. You can let go of your bitterness today.
